How much people earn in seasonal jobs in the US (H-2A)

The pay of an agricultural seasonal job is not a single number: it depends on the state, the role and the job order. What the H-2A rule guarantees is a floor — and you can see the offered amount in the job order itself before applying.

What the pay floor is

On the H-2A, the employer must pay at least the highest of the state's AEWR (Adverse Effect Wage Rate), the applicable prevailing wage and the federal or state minimum wage. That is why the amount changes from state to state and from year to year.

Hourly, piece rate and hours guarantee

Some jobs pay by the hour; others by unit produced (per box or bucket picked). When pay is by piece rate, the employer must still guarantee the hourly floor. There is also the guarantee of three-fourths of the hours in the contract (the three-fourths guarantee).

Deductions and costs

There may be permitted deductions, such as meals when provided under the conditions set in the regulations. Recruitment and certification costs may not be charged to the worker. Read the pay section of the job order and keep your pay stubs.

How much does a worker earn in agricultural seasonal jobs?

It varies by state and role. The offered amount is in the job order and, on the H-2A, cannot be lower than the highest of the applicable AEWR, prevailing wage and minimum wage.

What is the AEWR?

Adverse Effect Wage Rate: the reference minimum wage that the DOL sets per state for H-2A agricultural workers, to avoid a negative effect on the wages of American workers.

Can I be charged for the visa or the job?

Not recruitment and certification fees. There are personal costs in the consular process, and the H-2A has rules for reimbursing tickets and the visa; check the details in the job order.
