Work routine on H-2A: hours, weather and safety
What the day-to-day is like for H-2A workers: schedules, physical effort, heat and cold, safety training, pesticides and how to take care of yourself at work.

The H-2A routine usually starts early, involves physical outdoor work and varies with the harvest and the weather. Knowing the workday, the risks and the safety rules helps you prepare and protect yourself.
Quick answer: expect days of physical work, with schedules set by the employer and the harvest. Drink water, use protection against sun and cold, and take part in safety training. If there is a risk, tell the supervisor and know your rights.
What a day is usually like
- Early start, often at dawn, to take advantage of the milder hours.
- Shift work with breaks for rest and meals.
- Harvest rhythm: during harvest peaks the workday may be longer; at other times, shorter.
- Commute from housing to the field, usually with employer transportation.
Hours vary. In general, the employer must guarantee work for at least three quarters of the hours stated in the contract, according to program rules. See .
