Housing on H-2A: what the accommodation is like and what to ask
What the H-2A rule says about free housing, what accommodations are like and which questions to ask the employer before accepting a job.

On H-2A, the employer must offer housing at no cost to a worker who cannot return home the same day, within the program's rules, and the housing must meet the applicable safety and health standards. The conditions of each job are in the job order.
Quick answer: read the housing section of the job order. Confirm whether it is free, the type of accommodation, the distance from work, the kitchen and the laundry. Ask for the conditions in writing.
What the rule provides
H-2A rules provide that the employer supplies adequate housing, at no cost to the worker, and that the accommodation meets the applicable safety and health standards. The details are in the Department of Labor's Fact Sheet #26. Rules may have exceptions and vary; use the job order as the basis.
