Farm Work in the US: What to Really Expect
An honest account of what it's like to work in the fields in the United States on an H-2A visa. Routine, weather, pay, challenges and opportunities.
The reality of farm work in the US
Many people arrive in the US with unrealistic expectations. This guide is to really prepare you for what you will find.
The work routine
The day starts early — usually between 5 and 6 a.m. Field work is physical and demands endurance. Depending on the crop, you may be:
- Hand-picking fruits or vegetables
- Planting seedlings
- Operating farm machinery
- Working in greenhouses
The typical workday is 8 to 10 hours, 6 days a week during the peak season.
The weather is a real challenge
In the southern states (Florida, Georgia, North Carolina), summer heat can exceed 38°C (100°F). In the northern states (Michigan, Washington), autumn cold can be intense.
Tip: Bring clothes for different climates. Even if you are going to a hot state, mornings can be cold.
How much can you earn?
With the 2025 AEWR, an H-2A worker can earn between:
- $14/hour in states with the lowest rate
- $20/hour in states with the highest rate
