How to Prepare for the US Visa Interview
Practical tips for the consular interview for the H-2A visa and other work visas. What to say, what to avoid and how to improve your chances of approval.
The consular interview is decisive
The interview at the American consulate is the most important step of the process. The consular officer needs to believe you will return to Brazil after the work.
Documents you should bring
- Original passport and copies
- Printed DS-160 form with barcode
- Proof of payment of the consular fee (MRV fee)
- Job offer letter from the American employer
- Proof of ties to Brazil:
- Marriage certificate or children's birth certificates
- Property deed or rental contract
- Work card showing current employment
- Bank statement
What will the officer ask?
The most common questions include:
- "What is your job in the US?"
- "Who is your employer?"
- "Do you have family in Brazil?"
- "Have you been to the US before?"
- "When will you return?"
How to answer
Be direct and honest. Long, confusing answers create distrust. Answer what was asked, without adding unnecessary information.
Show ties to Brazil. The officer needs to be sure you will go back. Mention your family, your home, your steady job.
